The Japanese TeX Development Community  submitted an update to the

                japanese

package, which has now been renamed to

             babel-japanese .

Summary description:  Babel support for Japanese

 * Support for XeLaTeX/LuaLaTeX.

 * Fix a typo in \postpartname.

 * Add Japanese \proofname and \glossaryname.
