[issue:488] newpx problem after Jan.2025 update

Hi Michael,

After updating to newpx 2025-01-24,
using newpxtext+newpxmath does not change
the math font properly: e.g.,

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[defaultsups]{newpxtext}
\usepackage{newpxmath}
\begin{document}
($\mathit{kana}$)
\end{document}
%=================================

The contents of \mathit prints in CMR.

The log says
